What Age Should You Stop Trick-or-Treating?

In that location's no denying information technology…"What age should you stop trick-or-treating" is a "tricky" question. I would love to hear your stance in the comments at the bottom of the mail service, especially if you are a veteran parent of a tween or teen!

children walking to trick or treat

Having a middle schooler has been an interesting journey and then far. My nigh 12-yr sometime son is but one-inch shy of my five'6″ frame. His feet are at present two full sizes larger than mine and his voice has inverse over the terminal few months (yep, he is maturing early).

He is looking more like a human every day.

But deep down, he is withal a little boy.

But last week nosotros went to the pumpkin patch and he wanted to bounciness effectually and play like every other kid. He wanted to run through the splash pad at Ocean World and become drenched. But then the very next moment, he was begging to cheque his Fantasy Football squad's stats on my husband'south phone or jumping in on our chat of existent-world issues.

He is in this bad-mannered no-human being's-land between boyhood and manhood…and it is a tricky place to be.

This is the outset year he will not wear a costume to school. And the first twelvemonth he was invited to go to a Haunted House with his youth grouping (he is SOOOO not set for that). So patently, the question that is on my mind is…

What Age Should You Cease Play tricks-or-Treating?

I accept no solid reply. I've never parented a tween or teen earlier so I am literally the blind leading the blind in this example. But maybe the questions we should be asking our children are:

  • Do you desire to pull a fast one on-or-care for this year?
  • If non, what is something you would savour doing instead?
  • Would y'all like to pass out the candy at our house?
  • Are there whatever special events or activities that you would like to practise at Halloween?

My nuanced answer is that if your kidwantsto trick-or-care for, allow him. Set the expectation that respect is to exist shown to every single person and their property.

Middle-schoolers are at such an emotional time in their lives. That doesn't mean they need to be treated like snowflakes, merely that does mean that they demand to be treated with thoughtfulness and respect during a time that is unremarkably all nearly niggling kids.

Growing up is difficult and the social norms are often awkward. May we look to notice ways to include them in on the fun. Even if that ways allowing them to trick-or-treat longer than what we feel is advisable.

Let'south let our kids exist kids for however long they want to.

And if a 5'5″ man-child walks up to your door this Halloween and says, "trick-or-treat" in a deep, throaty voice, I hope you will gladly hand him a piece of candy, knowing that his parents are trying to preserve every terminal drop his childhood innocence.

What about you? What historic period practice y'all recall a kid should stop trick-or-treating?
